We’ve taken a look around the area for romantic places and things to do in Dumfries & Galloway. There’s the obvious magnificent collection of over 30 castles, towers and abbeys that tell tales of lives lived and lost and of course the world famous Gretna Green linked with runaway lovers who eloped to marry.
Stop by the Old Blacksmiths Shop in Gretna Green to learn about the marriage town that is full of love stories and tales of woe and see the collection of memorabilia and artefacts.
The aptly named Sweetheart Abbey is a 13th century abbey built by Lady Devorgilla in memory of her late husband, John Balliol and is thought to have inspired the creation of the word sweetheart. True to devine love, Lady Devorgilla carried her dead husband’s heart with her in a casket until her death.
Inspired by the beautifully wild landscape poet Robert Burns lived in the area for the last part of his life and wrote many romantic poems include A Red, Red Rose and Ae Fond Kiss and his home is now a museum where you can discover more about this romantic poet.
For lovers of antiques, period furnishings and fine art, Drumlanrig Castle is a haven and home to the Duke and Duchess of Buccleuch and Queensberry.
