Symon McGregor has been serving up Cullen Skink in the Brasserie for many years. Although the choices change regularly he wouldn’t dare take Cullen Skink off the menu, some of our guests come especially to have a bowl of this delicious Scottish favourite. Using Arbroath smokies, leeks, potatoes and cream this dish is finished with a soft poached egg and some chopped chives. We invite you to come try for yourself this signature dish. Over the next few weeks we will be asking our team at Aston Hotel Dumfries for their “Dumfries Bucket List”. Starting this week with the events team: I asked “What is the ONE thing you must do if you were visiting Dumfries and Galloway?” They unanimously agreed, “Mostly Ghostly Investigations” Ghost Walk is a must do if you are staying in Dumfries!
The tour starts from the Midsteeple in the centre of town and lasts roughly 1 hour and a half. The tour covers the horrible history in Dumfries from where famous murderer Hare (as in Burke & Hare) spent his last night in Scotland, a visit to the haunted Royal theater to a trip to the Whitesands where 9 women were strangled and burnt having been accused and found guilty of witchcraft. The tours run all year and in July/ August they are on every Wednesday starting at 9pm. Who would have thought that Dumfries’ history could be so gruesome!
