Lumiere Durham 2013

For four nights in November 2013 Durham City will once again be transformed by a series of light installations and projections from leading regional, national and international artists and organisers. Residents and visitors alike will be able to enjoy a sense of celebration as they explore the new nocturnal landscape of the city. Familiar and forgotten features and spaces will be given a new life as they become the subject or background for beautiful illuminations and projections. This year’s festival is certain to be just as popular with artworks sprawling right across the city in a sprinkle of winter magic. The light creations will range from large-scale projections, to neons, to installations using the latest LEDs, created by artists and lighting designers from near and far including pieces created by artists from the North East as part of the successful brilliant competition. Lumiere is a huge success that has quickly become a major event in the North East. We do recognize that large numbers of people in a small medieval city do present challenges and so we’ve worked closely with our partners to develop an event plan which will deliver a safe event that is more enjoyable for all visitors. Priority tickets for the city center can be booked in advance, and the full program of events for this unforgettable event can be found at

Home to Lord Barnard’s family since 1626, Raby is one of the finest medieval Castles in England.

Built by the mighty Nevill family in the 14th Century, Raby remained in the Nevill family until 1569 when after the failure of the Rising of the North, the Castle and its lands were forfeited to the Crown. In 1626, Sir Henry Vane the Elder purchased Raby and the Castle has remained in the Vane family ever since. The 200 acre (80ha) deer park surrounding Raby Castle has Red deer, the largest British wild land mammal, and the smaller Fallow deer – both herds containing the descendants of deer preserved in this area since Norman times. You can also browse the shops and relax in the tearooms, with a Woodland Adventure ground for the younger ones. High Force Waterfall is situated 20 miles away from Raby Castle.

Guided Tours around the castle on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesday, April June and September. Park and gardens are open May until September.
